Chinese Radicals Reference Chart & Printable Practice Worksheets

Over 80% of Chinese characters are phono-semantic compounds (形声字) composed of a semantic radical (部首, bùshǒu) that hints at category meaning and a phonetic component that hints at pronunciation. Mastering the 30 highest-frequency radicals below unlocks over 4,800 characters in our 9,574-character Make Me a Hanzi database.

How Radical Placement Changes Stroke Proportions

Left-Side Radicals (偏旁: 亻, 氵, 扌, 忄, 讠, 钅, 饣, 纟)

Left-hand radicals compress horizontally to occupy roughly 35% of the square grid. Right-falling strokes (捺) on the left always convert into short dots or rising Tí strokes (as in 木 → 林 or 土 → 地) so they do not collide with the right-hand component.

Top Crown Radicals (字头: 艹, 宀, ⺮, 雨)

Top radicals flatten vertically and spread slightly wider to shelter the lower component, establishing the vertical centerline of the character.

Enclosing & Carrier Radicals (字框 / 走之底: 囗, 门, 疒, 辶)

Three-sided and top-left frames (门, 疒) are written before their inner components, whereas bottom-left carriers (辶) and full boundary bottom bars (囗) are always written last.
